Santa Clara City Council Update:June 10, 2008: the Council approved the 2008-09 City Budget. Repair of the International Swim Center was delayed yet again because funds are not available to complete the project. However, as SCPF member Au Nguyen proposed a new swim center could be built in the area north of Bayshore immediately if Redevelopment Agency funds were not tied up in providing a $136 million subsidy for a 49ers stadium.
Mary Emerson also spoke, noting that the Northside Library project could also move forward immediately with the enlarged community room that the Friends of the Northside Library had originally requested if the RDA funds were not earmarked for a stadium.
March 18th, 2008: a group of Rivermark residents did heartfelt presentations on the great need for a library north of Bayshore. There are funds set aside by the city for the construction of the library, but there is no money in the General Fund for staffing the library or for buying books or equipment.
This is just the type of community need that Santa Clara Plays Fair believes that the city should address rather than committing city funds and resources to build a 49ers stadium that will result in a $111 million loss to the General Fund.
Erlinda Estrada and Mary Emerson spoke, too, on how the library could be staffed and financed. If the 49ers really care about this community like they claim, they will step up and pay their fair share to the General Fund for the training center ground lease to finance this library--and other pressing community needs.
Libraries change lives; empty stadiums don't.We still need volunteers to help us pass out informational flyers in neighborhoods and at shopping centers. Please click on "Volunteer" in the left hand column of this web page, complete the volunteer form and we'll contact you with details.
Who We Are
We are a grass-roots coalition of Santa Clara citizens and interested organizations who oppose the City of Santa Clara's subsidy of a stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. We seek to prevent the use of public assets or indebtedness to build or operate a professional football stadium in the City of Santa Clara.
What We Believe
Our city has long deferred more important projects. We believe that Santa Clara should not tax its citizens, increase its debt, or allocate land or any other valuable assets to build or operate a stadium.
Instead, Santa Clara should be using its funding resources to resolve such important needs in our community as:
- Affordable housing, particularly for the growing senior population.
- A long-promised and long-deferred new library for the residents north of Bayshore.
- Attracting businesses that provide basic services to residents north of Bayshore.
- Providing more affordable, family-friendly entertainment options.
- Seeking alternative and more lucrative investments in industries like green energy that would create full-time, year-round well-paying jobs.
- Rebuilding the City's depleted emergency reserves fund.
